About Jekyll
Jekyll is an open-source static site generator written in Ruby, created in 2008 by Tom Preston-Werner, a co-founder of GitHub. It turns plain text files written in Markdown into a complete static website that can be hosted anywhere without a database or server-side code.
How it works:
Content is written in Markdown files with front matter (title, date, layout), and the design is defined with Liquid templates. Running Jekyll builds the whole site into static HTML, CSS and JavaScript files.
Key features:
Blog-aware: built-in support for posts, categories, tags and permalinks.
GitHub Pages: Jekyll is the engine behind GitHub Pages, so sites can be published for free directly from a GitHub repository.
Themes and plugins for SEO, sitemaps, feeds and more.
Fast and secure: static files are quick to serve and have no database to attack.
Jekyll is popular for documentation, developer blogs, personal websites and open-source project pages.
