Title:2808 Ashby Description:If you live in Elmwood, it has to be a Leola Hall. Rarely available and specific to only a few blocks in this vibrant Berkeley neighborhood, prominent builder Leola Hall designed and built her homes to be warm gathering places. After the earthquake from 1906-1912, only a handful of homes were built by this artist, feminist, entrepreneur, and activist in Elmwood. During her most active years, she was the only woman architect building in the East Bay, and her homes defined what became Berkeley’s Craftsman style. With her signature grand staircase at the center of the home, windows and doors that she designed herself, and essential clinker brick fireplace, 2808 Ashby does not disappoint in its representation of the heritage. Only fittingly, the home has been in the steadfast hands of artists, entrepreneurs, and families over the decades, carrying on the legacy of Leola Hall’s prescient vision. Much of the architecture remains, and seamlessly plays background to each decade’s contemporary take. In its current iteration, the classic original wood wainscoting, crown molding, balustrade, and box beam ceilings, play in perfect harmony with the whimsy of the colorful, updated kitchen. The main level of the home is a great entertaining space with the architectural features being a conversation starter. The living room is a grand, oversized space with a wall full of windows, and it flows generously to the large formal dining room. From here, the kitchen has been updated with new cabinets, marble countertops, stainless appliances, Thermador range, bold wallpaper, and modern lighting, creating a space that is functional and fun. The garden is right off the kitchen and features a grassy play area, brick patio, and veggie bed. Up the grand winding staircase is a generous landing open to the stairs below. On this level are four bedrooms, including the master bedroom with it’s own bright sunroom. The second bedroom is also bright with windows on three sides of the room and a large closet. The third and fourth bedroom are at the front of the house. Very creatively, these two rooms were previously one big room, and a partition wall was installed to create more space to accommodate a growing family. One could imagine these two rooms becoming one once again, and possibly including a master bathroom and walk-in closet. On the basement level, there is a bonus room that was previously used as an art studio by the talented artist owner. The flexibility of the space is useful, as well as a plethora of storage in the crawlspaces. Access to the garden from the bonus room is both interior from the kitchen, as well as exterior from the garden. Elmwood is a spectacular, friendly neighborhood with College Ave. as the main street. Famed Elmwood Theater is a centerpiece of the neighborhood, and shops, coffee, bookstores, flower shops, and restaurants line the street so you’re never more than a few steps from everything you need. Close to Bart, transbay bus lines, shuttles, and freeways makes commuting one step closer to home. Walk Score: 91
