Title: Folk och musik Description:Syftet med min avhandling är att visa hur musik och i synnerhet visor bidragit till att skapa och uttrycka kulturell tillhörighet bland estlandssvenskar. I anknytning till dessa undersöks vilka idéer som låg bakom formandet av ett gemensamt estlandssvenskt kulturarv.      Avhandlingen består av tre separata delstudier som utgår från tre specifika vismaterial som på olika sätt använts av svenskspråkiga i Estland under mellankrigstiden. Huvudforskningsfrågan är hur visor bidragit till att skapa, återspegla och förstärka olika former av estlandssvenskhet från mitten av 1800-talet och framåt. Följdfrågor som lyfts i delstudierna är vilka sorters musikpraktiker visorna ingått i och hur identitetsformeringar med visor förändrats över tid. Andra följdfrågor är på vilka sätt visor från närliggande kulturer tagits upp av estlandssvenskarna och vilken inverkan dessa haft på identitetsformeringar. Slutligen ställs även frågorna vilka aktörer det är som initierat och främjat estlandssvenska identitetsformeringar med visor som verktyg samt vilka ideologiska grunder och syften som styrt deras verksamhet.
