Ở bất cứ lĩnh vực nào cũng đầy rẫy bất công và tệ nạn. Ngành giáo dục thì tràn lan bạo lực, thầy bạo lực với trò, trò bạo lực với thầy và bạo lực với nhau. Giáo trình thì lạc hậu và cứng nhắc giáo điều. Ngành y tế thì thuốc giả, thái độ phục vụ tệ hại, kẻ cả và ban ơn. Ngành giao thông thì nạn xe vua, tài xế nghiện ma túy gây tai nạn, cảnh sát giao thông sách nhiễu. Môi trường ô nhiễm, thực phẩm độc hại … và vô vàn những điều tệ hại khác. Vậy nhưng, bất kỳ ai lên tiếng phê phán tệ nạn xã hội thì ngay lập tức bị chụp cho cái mũ là “phản động”. Rất nhiều người dù không phải là dư luận viên vẫn luôn cho rằng “không nên xen vào chuyện chính trị, vì đã có đảng và nhà nước lo”. Tâm thức ấy, tư duy ấy bám khá sâu trong lòng xã hội, khó có thể thay đổi trong một sớm một chiều. Nguyên nhân là bởi sự thao túng và kiểm soát chặt chẽ của Đảng Cộng sản trong tất cả các lĩnh vực mà đặc biệt là đối với giáo dục và truyền thông. Họ kiểm soát toàn bộ hệ thống giáo dục từ mẫu giáo cho đến các bậc học sau đại học. Tất cả các giáo trình, giáo án đều phải theo khuôn mẫu mà Bộ Giáo dục đã cho sẵn. Hệ thống truyền thông thì bị kiểm duyệt gắt gao. Từ các thông tin báo chí, truyền hình đến tạp chí, sách, truyện... bất cứ tài liệu nào có tư tưởng trái ngược với quan điểm của Đảng đều bị cấm. Những thông tin chân thực và nguồn tri thức phong phú và rộng lớn của nhân loại vì vậy không đến được với người dân Việt Nam, nhất là về các lĩnh vực triết học và chính trị. Bằng cách đó, chính quyền đã gieo rắc sự sợ hãi và tạo ra những thế hệ chỉ biết vâng lời và tư duy theo định hướng. Nhưng, bất chấp sự hà khắc của chế độ và cho dù thiếu thông tin cũng như kiến thức do bị ngăn cấm, khát vọng tự do vẫn luôn ẩn dấu trong lòng xã hội và dân chủ vẫn luôn là mơ ước của nhiều người Việt Nam. Con đường đến với tự do và dân chủ là một con đường dài đầy gian khó, thậm chí đầy máu và nước mắt của rất nhiều người. Trên con đường này, những khó khăn không chỉ do chính quyền gây ra mà còn do tư duy và nhận thức phiến diện của nhiều người, nhiều thế hệ. Nhiều ý kiến cho rằng văn hóa, hay đặc tính dân tộc sẽ là rào cản cho quá trình tự do hóa, nhất là đối với các nền văn hóa Á Đông chịu ảnh hưởng nặng nề của tư duy Khổng Nho như Việt Nam. Nhưng những nền dân chủ đang ngày càng tự do hơn và ổn định hơn ở Nhật Bản, Hàn Quốc và Đài Loan đã cho thấy văn hóa là điều hoàn toàn có thể thay đổi được. Muốn thay đổi văn hóa cần phải bắt đầu từ giáo dục, muốn có dân chủ cần phải bắt đầu từ việc mở rộng không gian tự do. Để hướng tới một nền dân chủ lành mạnh trước hết phải có được những con người thực sự tự do, tự do về tư duy. Việc truyền tải kiến thức về chính trị, về dân chủ thông qua các khóa học và các cuốn sách không bị kiểm duyệt là một cách để giúp người dân Việt Nam tiếp cận được những tư duy mới, những quan điểm trái chiều nhau, tiếp cận kho tàng tri thức mênh mông của nhân loại, tiếp cận những quan điểm đối nghịch với quan điểm của Đảng Cộng sản Việt Nam, ĐÓ CHÍNH LÀ SỨ MỆNHCỦA NGƯỜI TỰ DO.
