uranus it is one of the least explored planets in the entire solar system. to date, only the voyager 2 probe has passed through it to observe its planetary system, making it a place full of mysteries that are gradually being revealed. from data from a mission that visited the planet almost 40 years ago, the researchers found that one or two out of 27 moon known planets from the seventh planet may have active oceans that blast plasma into space.
the scientists evaluated radiation and magnetism data collected from the planet and its moons by a spacecraft in 1986. observations show that the natural satellites of ariel, miranda, or both emit charged particles. this is likely because they may have liquid oceans beneath the icy surface, spewing material into space.

often these released particles are found on other ocean worlds, as is the case with jupiter's moons europa and saturn's enceladus. these discoveries are important for a better understanding of planetary systems.
a few years ago, we argued that measurements of energetic particles and electromagnetic fields were important not only for understanding the cosmic environment, but also for contributing to the research of wider planetary science. it turns out that this can be the case even for data older than me. it just goes to show how valuable logging in and learning first hand can be.

charged particles have been found trapped at uranus' equator, which the researchers say is odd. magnetic waves from a planetary system would normally cause the plasma to dissipate, but they were sandwiched between the planet and the moons ariel and miranda.
from physics models based on data collected by voyager 2, the researchers were able to determine that the plasma is emitted by a strong and constant source of particles that are shaped to excite.
the theory is that the particles are coming from at least one of uranus' moons, and ariel and miranda are prime suspects. the researchers believe that the plasma could be ejected either as clouds of vapor or as a result of high-energy particles colliding with the surface and ejecting other particles into space. these two mechanisms are very similar to each other, and the chances of being one or the other are almost 50-50%.
probably a constant stream of plasma that generates electromagnetic waves. these waves accelerate the particles enough for the probe to detect and keep them trapped at uranus' equator.
in the planetary system of uranus, more data and research still needs to be done to prove that the plasma comes from liquid oceans beneath the surface of its moons. because of this, it has been proposed to send a new spacecraft to the planet, a mission that would cost an estimated $4.2 billion and would not be ready until the early 2030s.
the data is consistent with the very exciting potential of having an active oceanic moon there. we can always do more complete simulations, but until we have new data, conclusions will always be limited.
