Simon Norfolk
Simon Norfolk - p ographer was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1963 and educated in England finishing at Oxford and Bristol Universities with a degree in Philosophy and Sociology. After leaving the Do entary P ography course in Newport, S. Wales, he worked for far-left publications specializing in work on anti-racist activities and fascist groups, in particular the British National Party. In 1994 he gave up p ojournalism in favor of landscape p ography. His book For Most Of It I Have No Words about the landscapes of the places that have witnessed Genocide was published in 1998 to wide approval. The piece was exhibited at venues including the Imperial War Museum in London; the Nederlands Foto Institut and the Holocaust Museum in Houston. More recent exhbitions, especially of his work from Afghanistan have been in Sarajevo, Naarden, Portland, Cork, Brasilia, New York, Mexico City, Graz and Arles. His work is held by many private collectors and in the collections of The Portland Art Museum, Oregon; The British Council; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Houston Museum of Fine Arts, amongst others. Simon Norfolk’s editorial work has appeared many times in such titles as The Observer, The Sunday Times Magazine, The South China Morning Post and La Republicca’s Magazine. Today he works mostly for Geo and The New York Times Magazine He is currently Artist-in-Residence with the Irish Army, on UN peacekeeping duties in Liberia and Kosovo. His third book, about the m graves of eastern Bosnia, titled Bleed, was published in June 2005.
