About: Modern Educational Research Society, Ltd. (“MERS”) firmly commits itself to the mission of publishing of high quality teaching materials. MERS’ publishing profile includes more than five hundred types of books covering over fifty subjects and caters to students at kindergarten, primary and secondary levels. During the 1950s, the focus of the company was on Chinese textbooks and teaching materials for Primary students, which included Chinese language, Chinese history, mathematics and letter writing. The company was one of the few leading publishers to respond in a proactive manner when the Education Department of Hong Kong began to advocate the use of the Activity Approach. By integrating Social Studies, Science and Health Education into one subject, teaching materials became more focused and were much welcomed by teachers and parents alike. Following the implementation of compulsory education in Hong Kong, the company expanded its reach to secondary schools, covering a wide range of disciplines including Chinese language, literature and history, Mandarin, mathematics, computer literacy, design and technology and electronic & electrical engineering. In addition to the textbook publishing, MERS also publishes leisure reading materials such as philosophical works, storybooks, fables and poem collections. A proactive advocate of the industry, MERS provides news about its educational activities and discussion of educational issues through its highly regarded quarterly periodical, the Modern Educational Bulletin. The company also organizes exhibitions, seminars and workshops for teachers and educational professionals in making a conscious effort to contribute to the cultural and educational developments in Hong Kong. Constantly striving to develop the best teaching materials for the learning population, MERS enthusiastically supports the use of information technology in schools. For years, multimedia CD ROMs have complemented MERS textbooks to provide a wider knowledge base and facilitate a more engaging learning experience. A web-based learning platform is in under development to reinvent the entire teaching/learning process. In addition, to assist teaching professionals in familiarizing with the most advanced technology, the company opened a 1000 square feet multimedia seminar room in 1997 and has offered free computer workshops to teachers since then.
