甘肃省地矿局主要从事基础地质调查、固体矿产勘查和水工环地质工作，专业门类齐全，技术装备先进，人员素质较高，具有区域地质调查、固体矿产勘查、水工环地质等专业的甲级资质90个，是一支在全国有重要影响的地勘队伍，也是我省找矿找水的主力军。局下属10个专业勘查院、6个辅助事业单位和3个直属公司。截至2016年底，职工总数12536人，其中在职5478人，离退休7058人。在职职工中专业技术人员2969人，占在职职工总数的54.2%。其中院士1人，省级科技领军人才4人，高级职称513人、中级职称896人。截至2016年底，全局拥有总资产40.91亿元。
建局60年来，在基础地质调查、固体矿产勘查、水工环地质工作等方面取得了丰硕成果，为提高我省矿产资源保障和综合利用水平提供了有力的技术支撑。
——地质找矿成果丰硕。先后发现并探明了资源储量世界排名第三的金川铜镍矿和白银铜矿、镜铁山铁矿、大水金矿、敦煌钒矿、塔尔沟钨矿、早子沟金矿、大桥金矿、安南坝锰矿、卡瓦铁矿、余石山铌钽矿等为代表的大中型矿床180余处，发现各类矿产地2700余处。金昌、白银、嘉峪关已成为新兴的工业城市，从而确立了资源性产业在我省工业结构中的主导型地位，为我省工业发展奠定了重要基础，也使甘肃从此成为我国重要的原材料供应基地之一。
——基础地质工作全面覆盖。组织完成了全省1/100万、1/20万区域地质、水文地质、环境地质调查等基础性地质工作任务，为我省找矿找水、防灾减灾、工程建设、城乡规划、产业发展提供了有力的技术支持和信息服务。
——服务经济社会成效显著。探明了一批城市供水和农田灌溉水源地，在严重干旱地区找水取得重要突破；地质灾害监测区的预警系统建设，重要城镇地质灾害调查与风险区划，灾害调查治理，为防灾减灾、灾后重建做出了重要贡献。
——“走出去”战略整体推进。非洲经营业务已拓展到水井施工、土木工程、城市供水、路桥施工等多个领域，市场开拓亮点频出，发展势头突飞猛进。借助共建“一带一路”发展契机，深入研究中亚五国经济环境、资源条件、矿业政策等，为早日开拓新的国外市场打下了基础。
——地质科研成果亮点纷呈。建局60多年来，在基础地质、地质勘查、实验测试、地学研究等方面取得了一系列重要科研成果。其中“六五”时期以来，获得国家级、省部级找矿、勘查、科技进步、科技成果奖200多项。
半个多世纪以来，全局广大地质工作者薪火传承、人才辈出。中科院院士宋叔和、肖序常、刘宝珺、陈梦熊和著名地质学家陈鑫等都曾在甘肃地矿局工作过，温家宝同志曾在甘肃省地矿局工作、生活近二十年。涌现出了以中国工程院院士汤中立为代表的一大批优秀地质专家和出色的管理干部。
