Title:bastoy.no is parked Description:bastøy ble drevet fra 1900 med hjemmel i loven fra 1896 om oppdragelseshjem for forsømte barn og ungdommer. men dette ble i stedet et skrekkeksempel av en gutteskole, og gutter med atferdsproblemer kunne bli truet med å bli sendt hit – uansett hvor i landet de befant seg. navnet kommer fra øya som skolen ble bygget på, bastøy, som ligger i oslofjorden, nær kommunegrensen i horten og fylkesgrensen mellom vestfold og østfold. institusjonen var i bruk som gutteskole fram til 1970, og byttet navn til foldin verneskole på 50-tallet ved overføring fra kirke- og kulturdepartementet til undervisningsdepartementet. nytt navn fikk institusjonen igjen i 1965, da navnet ble endret til foldin offentlige skole. i 1971 overtok statens vernehjem bygningene. fram til dags dato er anlegget i bruk, nå som et lavsikkerhetsfengsel ved det klingende navnet bastøy fengsel. mange vil nok påstå at det fungerte som et fengsel lenge før den tid. guttene som endte opp på bastøy kom fra alle lag av samfunnet, men felles for dem alle var at de var forsømte gutter. noen ble mishandlet, andre måtte ta hånd om seg selv fra ung alder, andre var småkriminelle og rusbrukere – og noen var foreldreløse. mange av guttene kom til bastøy fra skolehjem eller barneinstitusjoner, hvor de allerede hadde tilbrakt en del av sine unge liv. aldersrangeringen gikk fra 8 til 18 år, og skolen hadde i utgangspunkt plass til rundt 150 elever. til tross for dette var det jevnlig rundt 100 gutter på bastøy, og etter andre verdenskrig ble budsjettet redusert ned til 90 elever. for mange av de som bodde på bastøy som elever fortonet nok gutteskolen seg som et fengsel, like mye som en skole. denne skolen var kjent som et «særlig skolehjem», noe som i praksis betydde at kun de vanskeligste guttene ble sendt hit. dette hadde nok sin innvirkning på hvordan guttene ble behandlet av de ansatte, og bastøy fikk et rykte for sitt straffesystem og sin grusomme behandling av elevene. ett av de fem internatene ble brukt som en egen av
