Description:Arrate 2009.Jorge Arrate es un socialista, que ha estado profundamente involucrado en cada uno de los procesos sociales de los últimos cuarenta años. Muy joven estuvo encargado de la más importante obra del Gobierno popular de Salvador Allende: La Nacionalización del Cobre. En el exilio luchó por la unidad del Socialismo Chileno, más tarde, por la creación de la Concertación para la recuperación de la democracia y una transición pacífica.
A pesar de su historia Concertacionista, no es un obsecuente. En el gobierno de Eduardo Frei, mientras era Ministro Secretario General de Gobierno, se opuso a que el gobierno realizara una defensa política del Dictador Pinochet detenido en Londres, como finalmente ocurrió, gracias a la gestión y posición favorable de otros ministros, entre ellos, otro socialista.
Estos últimos años ha señalado un agotamiento de la Concertación, denunciando su incapacidad –y muchas veces, su rechazo- para realizar los cambios que le prometiera a Chile en 1989. Así mismo, rechaza la exclusión política y critica la incapacidad de la Concertación para crear alianzas con la izquierda excluida del Parlamento. Debido a esto ha llamado junto a otros dirigentes sociales y políticos a “unir las fuerzas políticas y sociales de auténtica vocación democrática y popular”, evocando, las históricas luchas heroicas en que el pueblo ha resultado victorioso:
“En 1938, el Frente Popular derrotó a la derecha porque unió a radicales, socialistas, comunistas y movimiento sindical y recibió apoyo de jóvenes de la Falange Nacional. En 1958 la democracia chilena, viciada por el cohecho de la derecha y la influencia del dinero, fue objeto de importantes perfeccionamientos gracias al acuerdo sobre “Saneamiento Democrático” que alcanzaron las fuerzas progresistas en el Congreso, entre ellos una profunda reforma al sistema elect y la derogación de la ley que ilegalizaba al Partido Comunista. El triunfo del NO en el plebiscito de 1988 y la elección de Patricio Aylwin en 1989 fueron importantes momentos de coincidencia de las fuerzas democráticas y populares. Lagos y Bachelet, al no alcanzar la mayoría en la primera vuelta elect , triunfaron en la segunda gracias a la a ulación de los sufragios de las fuerzas de avanzada.”

Hoy es más necesario que nunca para el país construir una alternativa amplia, viable y representativa de toda la diversidad del pueblo democrático de Chile. Una opción de cambio que convoque a las diferentes manifestaciones sociales y políticas que recogen las luchas por un país democrático, equitativo y justo. Reflexionando sobre esto es que Jorge Arrate nos invita a crear un Nuevo Pacto Democrático y Popular donde las fuerzas progresistas del centro, la izquierda socialista y los sectores sistemáticamente excluidos del parlamento vuelvan a la base social y ciudadana para luchar juntos contra las injusticias para mejorar y dignificar, finalmente, la vida de las personas.
