WELCOME TO SIMON BUTTERWORTH P OGRAPHY. This site is designed to showcase my landscape p ographs. My love of the great outdoors has been p ed down to me by my father and grandfather, who were both keen outdoorsmen. My grandfather was one of the legendary Manchester Ramblers who fought for country side access during the 1930's and 40's. My own love of wild places led me to make a permenant move to Scotland in 2002 so that I could spend more time in the greatest wilderness areas that Britain has to offer. It was while do enting my travels in the Scottish Highlands that p ography became more and more important to me. It wasn't long before my trips were being planned around p ographing the most scenic places at the best times of day; landscape p ography has grown into something of an obsession since then. I plan my p ographic excursions around 'the day job' as a cl ical musician. I often spend the afternoons before evening concerts scouting around new areas, looking for potential images to be captured at some future date. What I look for in my images is very hard to define - I know when I see it, but it's difficult to describe in words. Perhaps the closest I can get is: simplicity with a surreal edge. One way of acheiving this end is by using long exposures; this technique ac ulates time in a single image, often providing unexpected and unusual results. Simple scenes can become magical as water and clouds blur during the seconds or minutes the exposure is running. Many images are just the result of making my way around the lesser known areas of Scotland with my eyes wide open. The dedicated p ographer looks for potential images all the time, whether driving along the motorway or walking across the city in the of night - you just never know what you might find if your mind is receptive to the environment around you. I don't limit myself to p ographing scenes of wild beauty - I am also drawn to buildings, factories, and civil engineering projects such as dams, bridges and roads. Under the right conditions these things can become fascinating and even beautiful. The transforming factor for all subjects is light; it is the single most important element in any landscape p ograph. As film Director, Aaron Rose said 'in the right light, at the right time, all things are extraordinary.' To capture the finest light takes planning and dedication - I will often wait for weeks or even months to capture a scene under the optimum lighting conditions. AWARDS 2007. Highly commended. UK Landscape P ographer of the Year Competition. 2008. Two images highly commended. UK Landscape P ographer of the Year Competition. 2008. First prize winner. If you would like to buy an image from the website that is not featured at City Hall, please get in touch with me by email. Prices for these prints will be the same but delivery times may be a little longer. Glasgow City Hall is a great place to visit, it has a coffee shop, a bar and several performance areas including a 1200 seater auditorium. The doors are open all day, and you can often take in a concert or a recital, as well as eating at one of the numerous top quality retaurants nearby - my own favourite is Cafe Gandolfi, just opposite the stage door entrance in Albion Street. If you have any questions regarding any of the features on this site please feel free to email me using the link. Simon
