Tecz.org, Years back when people say "I am an IT professional", they referred to the software development job, but today the equation has changed. With every line of code already written in every available language and lying in the code repository of the IT giants, the need for software professionals has come down steadily. However the IT explosion opened a new arena in the IT Infrastructure category and every software development company(both product and services based) is trying create a niche for themselves in IT Infrastructure category. Have you ever wondered what this ITIS means. Well this is the implementation and continual support of the backend infrastructure like networking, servers, storage, backup and recovery services alike. The computing power of the processors has steadily gone up in accordance with Moore's law, but that made servers and systems running underutilised. Virtualization of hardware to function as two or more servers like LPARs and LDOMs came to the rescue but this proved inadequate. And then it was the era of virtualization software like VMware, Xen, Hyper V etc that effectively used the computing resources. And today virtualization is everywhere in the server hardware and software, Networking and Storage. As virtualization and internet evolved the next big word in the IT industry was cloud computing where the IT infrastructure built and maintained by the companies are leased or sold to the customers thereby removing the burden of infrastructure maintenance and upgrade from the clients. The selling point of this Infrastructure as a service is that you can increase or reduce your resources as per your requirement. After cloud computing the next big thing is yet to happen. So when you say I am an Infrastructure engineer you may be working as an Operating system administrator(Windows, Linux and Unix) or a networking professional connecting the computers of the world or a virtualization specialist virtualizing the Datacenter or a security professional laying around with firewall and encryption systems protecting the data from prying eyes or a DB administrator fine tuning the databases or a storage administrator maintaining all the data or the less talked about but important backup and recovery services coming to the rescue on data loss. Gone are those days when you work in isolation in a single technology. Three or four years down the lane the industry expects skilled technicians trained in three or more technologies. So a young professional can start with any one technology like networking or OS administration and then gradually move ahead with other technologies. Certifications like CCNA, EMC ISM, Windows and Linux make for a good resume. We at tecz.org are trying to build a comprehensive website which deals with each and every aspect of Infrastructure services. We add content on a regular basis and we hope that this site will be a single source for all technologies in the near future. Happy Learning.
