WAARSCHUWING Je staat op het punt een zogenaamde ‘pro ana’ site te bezoeken. ‘Pro ana’ staat voor ‘pro anorexia nervosa’. Op deze site discussiëren anorexia-patiënten over wat hen het meeste bezighoudt, zoals trucs om nog dunner te worden dan ze al zijn. Bezoekers van deze site kunnen schrikken van de ongezonde en gevaarlijke trucs deze patiënten elkaar leren. Maar het meest schokkend is nog wel dat ze daarbij net doen alsof het allemaal heel gewoon is. Ze ontkennen ziek te zijn. Voor deze patiënten is hun anorexia geen levensgevaarlijke psychiatrische ziekte, maar een ‘gezonde’ manier van leven. Op deze pro ana site krijg je daardoor maar een heel beperkt beeld van een ziekte je niemand toewenst. Zo lees je niets over de zware psychische en lichamelijke gevolgen van anorexia. Patiënten met anorexia zijn de hele dag alleen maar bezig met hongeren. Ze verliezen het contact met familie en vrienden, en worden steeds eenzamer. Een groot deel van de patiënten maakt de school niet af en raakt blijvend arbeidsongeschikt. Van elke 18 opgenomen anorexia-patiënten sterft er 1 binnen 10 jaar. Met een ‘gezonde’ manier van leven heeft dat niets te maken.
