Tribilogy is the study of Friction,Wear, and Lubrication of surfaces in relative motion. A brief introduction to the evolution of the field, its multi-disciplinary nature, and its applicability. A solid to semi-fluid mixture of a fluid lubricant and a thickener – primarily used where the lubricant must act as a seal and-or maintain its position in a mechanism. Greases are made by dispersing thickners in lubricating oils-bases to form stable colloids. The grease property depends on the viscosity, the viscosity index, and oxidation stability of the base oil.Thickners transform the oil into grease. The two principal groups of thickeners are metal soaps and inorganics – soaps being more widespread. Organic thickners are used for special applications. Properties of the different types of greases, applications, and service-operating conditions. A couple of widely accepted grease lubrication mechanisms are described. Grease-Life models are also discussed briefly.
