PHD - CLP Health Project - Welcome to PHD - CLP Health Project Website
Partners in Health Development (PHD) : The CLP is a poverty alleviation programme co-funded by UKaid from the DFID and AusAID and sponsored by the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Government of Bangladesh. Its aims to improve livelihood security of the poorest island char dwellers the first phase of CLP (CLP1) worked in five districts, namely Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj. The second phase of CLP (CLP2) started from April 2010 and expanded its work to Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Pabna and Tangail districts. CLP’s interventions are primarily on island chars as these islands contain the bulk of the poorest char dwellers. The target group of CLP-2 consists of 67,000 households (approximate population is 335,000) living on the chars in extreme poverty. What leads households into poverty and what leads households out of poverty are not mirror images of each other. Food insecurity, maternal and child malnutrition are the major means by which poverty is transmitted to future generations. The descent into poverty can typically be caused by a number of factors including suffering shocks. Several Bangladeshi and international studies maintain that health shocks and the attendant cost of accessing health services are the single major explanation for pushing people into poverty.
