The concept of a 24/7 economy (implying a society that remains awake at all times, functioning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) is being proposed in response to the challenges posed by the irreversibility on the globalization phenomenon. A new mindset is expected to emerge in Mauritius, allowing for the possibility of having more alternative working practices, in order to progressively replace the constrained 9 to 4 culture (i., the traditional five-day work week with standard 9am to 4pm working hours).

being launched in Mauritius with a view to:
improving the international competitiveness of all sectors of the economy, thereby promoting long-run, sustained economic development;
enhancing productivity at the work place;
encouraging the widespread use of ICT to foster innovation in the way we work;
enhancing the nature of business networks in order to create an effective entrepreneurial environment that, in turn, will nurture the development of SMEs;
providing more choices as well as employment opportunities, for instance encouraging more women and disabled people, according to their convenience, to be economically active and contribute to the workforce;
allowing Mauritius to be part of global supply chain network against the backdrop of a fully-integrated economy;
encouraging the development of clusters so as to enhance service delivery (such as provision of goods and services on a 24-hr basis);
having fewer s s shortage, since people will be allowed to take up more than one job;
allowing employees to achieve better work-life balance through flexible work practices;
widening the circle of opportunities for all.
