THE MADRAS DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION (MDRF) – A centre of excellence for Research & Education in diabetes & related complications In order to undertake advanced research of international standards on diabetes and its complications, the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), a unique 100% nonprofit research centre exclusively devoted for diabetes research, was established in 1996 at Gopalapuram in the heart of Chennai. The MDRF’s *** growth and the need to cater to a much larger number of scientists, has led to the establishment of a new research centre called as the ‘The Kallam Anji Reddy Centre’ at Siruseri in the out***s of Chennai. The aim of the new Centre of MDRF is to establish an environment for scientists and students to innovate new technologies and products, which can be translated to be used in therapy of disease. The new research facility is a multidisciplinary science and technology facility with tremendous potential for *** and biotechnological developments. The Kallam Anji Reddy centre of MDRF will also train and stimulate originality and creativity amongst scientists, which will lead to cutting edge research. Research on diabetes is a continuous activity at MDRF. Within a short time, MDRF has gained international and national recognition for its original research contributions. In November 1996, the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India also recognized MDRF as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO). MDRF is recognized by the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and by the University of Madras for conducting Ph.D. courses. Twenty three students are currently undergoing training for the Ph.D. degree. The research departments at MDRF include epidemiology, advanced biochemistry, clinical drug trials, cell and molecular signaling, genetics, nutrition, tissue culture lab, radioisotope lab, biostatistics, library and auditorium. More than 270 papers have been published during the last ten years in various International and national journals. Today, MDRF has emerged as one of the topmost research centres for diabetes in Asia. It has collaboration with several national and international research centres and universities. In another significant development, the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation has been designated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi as ‘MDRF-ICMR Advanced Centre for Genomics of Type 2 Diabetes’.
