Welcome to Tweak TV - TweakTV
TweakTV is the ultimate resource for your HDTV. If you are looking to optimize your HDTV settings, there is no better resource on the internet than TweakTV. TweakTV is led by today's top professional calibrators. You can always depend on TweakTV for the most accurate, timely information for your HDTV., What is the best screen size for your room?, It's always something. Can't really say when it started. For me, it may have been about three weeks after I purchased my then top-of-the-line Pioneer DV-09 DVD player. I thought it rendered the best images I had ever seen or would likely see in my home for several years, but apparently I was wrong. Page-One splashes in all the mags insisted that I buy a new box that had PROGRESSIVELY scanned images......then it had to go for one that had a more favorable black offset (0IRE vs. 7.5IRE)......then it had to be swapped for one that had an HDMI connection......then IT had to go for not ONE, but TWO new higher definition players because, it turned out, we were in the middle of a format war and studios were taking sides and, well, I couldn't miss any releases, you know......then the surviving player had to have an HDMI connection with a higher number suffix, then, This past weekend I needed a new TV for a spare bedroom. This is the room that the old college roomate and the in-laws stay in when they are over for the special occ ions. This room is also the space your wife asks you to sleep in when you get into the fight about her credit card spending. Or, when you spend too much on "uneccesary" toys, like HDTV's, You can't measure black! Yup, that's right. For all the focus on this important image quality parameter, we can't truly measure it. We measure "Black Level" with light meters. If the face of a display were truly black (absent all light) we couldn't measure it! We can only measure a screen's inability to give us a true black. Even then, the "light leakage" on screen has to be above a certain (very small) level before even the best, most expensive, state-of-the-art instrumentation can quantify it. Wordsmithing, you say? .....well maybe, but it gets me to a more important issue, Sources say that the Geek Squad calibration services have the following details: Retail: $299 Workforce: 500 plus calibrators Workforce Education: Training is conducted by the Internal Affairs team at the Maplewood, MN training facility. Students spend two days learning theory and hands-on s s with ISF certified instructors According to the sources, the U.S is currently completing approximately 3,000 calibration transactions per week from approximately 780 locations. If this math is correct, that means that the Geek Squad is performing close to 150,000 calibrations this year alone? Could this be true? Is two days of training equal to the twenty plus years the TweakTV calibration staff has?, There are LED backlit displays on the market today that would meet the standards destined to be in effect next year that measure 140 fL (foot-lamberts) of light output. Watching a movie with those settings would be roughly the same as having two sticks poked in your eyes simultaneously, except it would last longer. Personal preferences vary, but most videophiles would be very satisfied if whatever "box" they were watching had a 40 fL governor on it. What if the new rules stated that all televisions shipped as of a certain date must not exceed 50 fL out of the box. That would make calibrators happy because they had some "wiggle room" with which to calibrate, the viewers happy because even if they never opted for calibration, the default picture would be less offensive and it would leave manufacturers to duke it out with the variety of technologies and "display tricks" they are used to. The only thing they may have to give up is the infamous "torch mode", which isn't really a take-away if ALL must comply.
