Hedges Lab - Evolutionary Biology
Our research explores connections between biological evolution and Earth history in all organisms and time periods. Because time itself is of great utility in drawing these connections, we often use molecular clocks in combination with morphology, phylogeny, geology, and the fossil record to uncover historical patterns and reveal the mechanisms of change. We study, among other topics, speciation, adaptive radiation, lineage diversification, historical biogeography, and mass extinction. Of particular interest are global changes in the planetary environment such as continental breakup, climate change, and extraterrestrial impacts, and their effect on the evolution of life. Research topics in the lab have included the early evolution of life, vertebrate evolution, historical biogeography, primate evolution, and biodiversity & conservation. A large component of our work is com***tional (bioinformatics), involving the ***ysis of sequence data from many genes or complete genomes. Another component involves field work and collection of new DNA sequences as needed for particular questions. This laboratory is part of NASA's Astrobiology Institute.

Caribmap - A cartographic history of Caribbean islands
Caribmap is a resource for exploring historical map images of Caribbean islands. The site has evolved since 1999 and now presents images of ~1800 maps of the islands printed over five centuries (16th–20th). This is still a small sampling of the thousands of different maps that were printed. High resolution map images allow visitors to ***m in on details, including place names of historical and scientific importance. After selecting an island, all map images of that island appear in chronological order above the viewing area, and can be browsed. C*** on a thumbnail loads the image into the larger viewing area and displays the map information at left. Once loaded, ***ming in on the image is possible by controls that appear below the image viewing area. A resources page provides links to online cartographic tools, including other sites containing map images of Caribbean islands. A literature page presents relevant literature references for Caribbean cartography.
