About - Patershuk Wood Carving
My carvings begin with an idea, often a piece of wood will suggest something to me. I begin by selecting pieces of wood, the wood is then glued together to accommodate a carving in in the round or a relief. When I'm producing a carving in the round or in relief I often make a plasticine maquette, I then draw a series of images which I transfer onto the wood. With relief carvings I draw my subject and then transfer the imagery onto my planed wooden surface. My next step involves the use of chisels, the chisels pare away the wood until I have the shape I desire. Some of my early work involved sanding but very rarely is sanding a part of my carving. I'm fond of the leaving the chisel marks in the wood as it gives character. Finally I treat the wood with oil to preserve and enhance the carving. I'm inspired by the world around me, I particularly enjoy carving fonts, nature and religious imagery. Show Statement This show is an eclectic collection of items I've created using wood over the past thirty five years. I create using wood because it is such a beautiful, strong, organic, renewable material. I was born and raised in northern British Columbia and from an early age I was appreciative of the forest and the wood that was harvested from that forest. My aim is to produce items that reflect and honour the wonderful material that wood is. My work is an expression of who I am, it reflects my environment, my life story and my artistic urges.
