www.somethingunderthebed.com is a bibliography dedicated to the preservation of published matter, past and present, that has to do with the creative arts. the creator of this project has focused on those crafts she already had a substantial library for - soft sculpture, tatting, candle making, chainmail knitting and polymer clay. other disciplines will be added as libraries of material are acquired. the greatest achievement has been the extensive catalog of craft magazines. this catalog grows every day. the bibliography pages are free to use, but the creator does not give permission to copy the review pages or magazine catalogs for commercial use. if she could figure out how to do it, she'd be making money on the bibliography herself! something under the bed is dedicated to building the bibliography and catalog for craft disciplines that the library of congress feels itself above doing. it is my belief that crafters' and artists' interests should not end up on the ash heap of history, and deserve the respect and attention of historians as much as battles and politics. our cultures are not just red in tooth and claw, but have built themselves from the skills of our hands and our ability to inspire each other to be better than the generation before. our crafts are a fundamental pulse point of that human condition. i don't think having a practical aspect separates craft from art other than as a useful label to point out that we all like to have art in our daily lives. i want to preserve that aspect of our culture and the memory of those people who took part in its evolution.
