Description:Donald T. Yoshino, FAIA is a sansei (third generation Japanese American, his grandparents were immigrants from Japan) and was born in an internment camp during World War II in Amache, Colorado. After his family was released from the internment camp, they returned to their ranch in rural California, where Don grew up working on the family farm, harvesting grapes. After high school, Don followed in his brother’s footsteps and attended school for Architecture at California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. Following graduation, he studied abroad in Kyoto, Japan where he focused on Japanese architectural history.
When he returned to the US, he became an apprentice for the world renowned Italian architect and visionary, Paolo Soleri in Scottsdale, Arizona at the ground breaking “arcology”, Arcosanti, where he met his wife, Candy. Don and Candy have two daughters, Natalie and Christina, and six grandchildren.
Don opened his architectural office in Boca Raton in 1991 and continues to practice architecture locally and internationally. Don became a fellow, the highest honor bestowed to a member, of The American Institute of Architects in 2007.
Don has been actively involved at The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens since 1992. He is a Wisdom Ring member and has served as Facilities Committee Chairman and as President of the Board of Trustees. He was also actively involved in the museum’s expansion and Japanese Gardens implementation, working closely with the Master Garden Designer, Hoichi Kurisu. Most recently, Don became a 2017 recipient of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in recognition of his work with The Morikami.
Inspired by his lifelong love of art and the Japanese minimalist Zen philosophy, Don was drawn to the ancient technique of sumi-e, which he now utilizes for most of his artwork. All of Don’s originals are stamped with his name in shuniku, a red ink.
