5mn.org Profile
Title:5-Minute Nuclear | No Genius Necessary
Description:First recall some quick science: Light is categorized by frequencies-called "bands." Different bands penetrate different depths in physical things. Ultraviolet (UV) light is one such band with sub-bands called UVA, UVB, and UVC Very little UVC makes it through the atmosphere though... we wont worry about it 1 Sunblock and Sunscreen are not the same things! Sunblock, such as those with metal-based active ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, often appear white on the skin and work as a shield by reflecting and refracting the incident UVA and UVB photons away from the surface. Sunscreen, on the other hand, is often clear and work by physically catching or absorbing the photons like a net. A major drawback of most sunscreen chemicals is that they often break down after several hours of exposure to sunlight, which means you need to reapply them. Additionally, some of the compounds are readily absorbed by the body. For more information on active ingredients, including what to avoid and why see Magic in the bottle-also in the summer sun series. (COMING SOON!) 2 All sun lotion ratings are not created equal The sun protection factor (SPF) is a measure of radiation limiting effect mainly within the Ultraviolet B (UVB) sub-band and is not usually a rating for protection against the UVA band. There is increasing evidence that incriminates UVA in the early contribution of skin ***.[ref]El Ghissassi F, Baan R, Straif K, et al. A review of human carcinogens - part D: radiation. Lancet Oncol 2009;10:751-2.[/ref] This makes it essential to ensure your bottle is labeled as "broad spectrum" which means it is designed to limit the effects of both the UVA and UVB bands. The active ingredients, which differ from brand-to-brand, are also not created equal. 3 You probably don't apply enough of this stuff A 2002 Canadian study conducted a trial that examined the application of sun lotion by 56 participants over a period of 4.5 years. They found that the median amount applied was less than half of the amount used for SPF determination. [ref]Neale R, Williams G, Green A. Application patterns among participants randomized to daily sun lotion use in a skin *** prevention trial. Arch Dermatol 2002;138:1319-25.[/ref] The thickness of the sun protection matters, and using half the proper amount leads to less than one half of the labeled SPF. [ref]Petersen B, Wulf HC. Application of sun lotion: theory and reality. Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed 2014;30:96-101.[/ref][ref] Isedeh P, Osterwalder U, Lim HM. Teaspoon rule revisited: proper amount of sunscreen application. Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed 2013; 29: 55-6. [/ref] Osterwalder and Lin's "Teaspoon Rule Revisited" suggests the following: 4 It is time to reapply-and I don't care if you just did. Reapplication of sun lotion within the first hour of exposure provides better protection than the traditional reapplication every two to three hours because it helps people achieve even coverage with the proper amount of product before too much sun exposure has damaged the skin.3)Reapplication is especially necessary if your skin has rubbed against your surroundings, which include a towel, sand, and/or the water. This stuff isn't glued to your skin and will rub right off, leaving you exposed and at risk. Additionally, there exists no standard on what "waterproof" means and, as such, if you look down to see an oily film floating on the water, your sun protection just decided to go on vacation too. 5 Rub in that spray! Aerosol spray is most often a sunscreen and as such requires more reapplications than a sunblock. But what you may not realize is that it still needs to be rubbed in! Too close and you're not getting even coverage. Too far and the sunscreen particles are overly dispersed and allow light to pass right through. You've probably experienced this if you have ever sprayed some of this stuff on and "inexplicably" still got burned. (Figuratively and literally!) So rub it in and revert to #4, reapply! So that is 5 things you need to know about sun lotions. If you enjoyed this please be sure to throw us a like, share, and follow. Have a great day!
